Cellar Star

Cellar Star keeps track of your wines so that you can enjoy them at their best

Import

Cellar Star can import your existing cellar inventory from other cellar tracking applications and spreadsheets if they support export in CSV (comma separated values) file format.

Examples of these types of applications are: CellarTracker, Microsoft Excel, and Apple Numbers.

Imported inventory is added to any existing inventory you may already have in Cellar Star.  An import may be used for a trial period of 14 days.  After the trial period you can decide to keep or delete your import.  During this trial period, the bottles imported do not count against totals affecting in-app purchase limits.

In general the steps are:

  • Make sure iCloud is turned on for Cellar Star and for your desktop computer (see: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207689)
  • On your desktop computer, export your cellar inventory from the other cellar tracking application as a CSV file.
  • On your desktop computer, copy your CSV file to the Cellar Star Folder of your iCloud Drive.
  • In Cellar Star, tap Settings (gear in upper right corner of the main Screen), then tap Import and complete the import process.

CellarTracker

There are two methods for exporting from CellarTracker (see also: https://support.cellartracker.com/article/29-exporting-data).  Both methods must use a web browser on your desktop computer.  The first method is the simplest but will not import your public and private notes.

Method One:

  • On your desktop computer web browser, Sign In to CellarTracker.
  • Go to the view of "My Cellar" you'd like to export.
  • Click the Export button in the top right.
  • In the Export dialog , verify that Export Format: Comma Separated Values is selected and all of the checkboxes in Selected Columns are checked before clicking the Export button.
  • Find the exported file on your desktop computer and rename or save it as inventory.csv.
  • Copy inventory.csv to the Cellar Star folder of your iCloud Drive.
  • In Cellar Star, tap Settings (gear in upper right corner of the main screen).
  • Wait for the subtitle of the Import cell to read “inventory.csv ready”.  Then tap Import and complete the process in Cellar Star.

Method Two (use this method if you want to to import your public and private notes):

There are many web browsers and each is a bit different but in general, you will need to make three separate export requests and then save each result as a specially named CSV file.  If your web browser doesn't offer a File>Save As... or similar function, you can always copy and paste the entire result into a simple text document using Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) and then save from there.

  • Type or copy each of the following three requests into your web browsers address bar, replacing <USERNAME> and <PASSWORD> with the user name and password of your CellarTracker account.  Each of these requests will fill your web browser with your CellarTracker data in CSV format.  Don't worry, you don't have to read or understand what all that text means.  Then Save the result with the Save As filename indicated.

  • Copy inventory.csv, notes.csv, and privatenotes.csv to the Cellar Star folder of your iCloud Drive
  • In Cellar Star, tap Settings (gear in upper right corner of the main screen).
  • Wait for the subtitle of the Import cell to read "inventory.csv, notes.csv, privatenotes.csv ready". Then tap Import and complete the import process in Cellar Star.

Spreadsheets and Other Cellar Tracking Applications

For all other applications that you may be using, if you can export your inventory in CSV format, you may be able to import into Cellar Star.  See the instructions for your application for export details.  In particular, Microsoft Excel, and Apple Numbers are able to export in CSV format.

  • Export your inventory from your cellar tracking application to CSV file named import.csv

Microsoft Excel:

File>Save As

File name: import.csv

Save as type: CSV-UFT8

 Apple Numbers:

File>Export To>CSV...

Export Your Spreadsheet: CSV

Advanced Options>TextEncoding: Unicode (UTF-8)

Save As: import.csv

Other cellar tracking applications (consult their documentation):

Export inventory in CSV format (preferably with UTF8 encoding if possible) to a file named import.csv

  • Copy import.csv to the Cellar Star folder of your iCloud Drive.
  • In Cellar Star, tap Settings (gear in upper right corner of the main screen).
  • Wait for the subtitle of the Import cell to read "import.csv ready".  Then tap Import and complete the import process in Cellar Star.

After Import

The Import section of the Settings page looks similar to this after a successful import:

In this example an import was completed June 7, 2020.  Tapping on this cell will offer the choice to keep the import or delete it from your Cellar Star inventory.  Once you keep an import, the bottles count against totals affecting in-app purchase limits.
